The diffusion capacity is the technique that measures the ability of the respiratory system for gas exchange, thus allowing a diagnosis of the malfunction of the alveolar-capillary unit. The most important parameter to assess is the CO diffusion capacity (DLCO).

Diffusing Capacity of Lung for Carbon Monoxide (DLCO) is a measure of the efficiency of lung gas transfer. This test is used to further characterise a respiratory defect following spirometry and lung volume testing, to provide evidence supporting a specific respiratory pathology. Study objective: Single-breath diffusing capacity of the lung for carbon monoxide (DLCO) is used as a pulmonary function test (PFT) to assess gas transfer in the lungs. The implications of a low DLCO are well-recognized, but the clinical significance of a high DLCO is not clear.
Kco will be greater than 120% predicted in case 1, 100-120% in case 2, and 40-120% in case 3, depending on pathology. Kco and Va values should be available to clinicians, as fundamental to understanding the clinical implications of DL(CO). The diffusing capacity for nitric oxide (DL(NO)), and the DL(NO)/DL(CO) ratio, provide additional insights. CO Gas Transfer (diffusing capacity) Test. Watch later. Share. Copy link.

Carbon monoxide (CO) diffusing capacity (DL CO) measures the transfer of a diffusion-limited gas (CO) across the lung alveolocapillary membrane.CO combines with hemoglobin (Hb) about 210 times more readily than does oxygen and in the presence of normal amounts of Hb and normal ventilatory function, the primary limiting factor to CO diffusion is the status of the membrane (1,2). 2021-04-02
